Education in Motion

Skutt Catholic High School
Omaha, NE 2013
Picture

This is the first "immersive" rolling ball sculpture. The sculpture features a "student module," represented here as the cardboard box. The student module is a completely student-built section of the sculpture. A ball enters through a hole at the top and exits at the bottom. What the ball does in-between is up to their own creative effort.

The student module can be redesigned and replaced as each new group of students comes up with creative ways to process the balls.

Art students also get to play a part in this rolling ball sculpture, thereby making it even more immersive to a larger group of students. There are two mounting places for canvases to show off student artwork. There is also a pedestal to showcase sculptures and pottery. When the 20 balls are released, they jump through the air and over the pedestal.

This sculpture was commissioned to celebrate 20 years of academic excellence at Skutt Catholic high School. Once 20 balls collect at this point, they release quickly in succession, race down the track and jump through the air.
